Introducing Women in Innovation, the infocus award and our ambassadors

For our infocus Women in Innovation campaign, Innovate UK is publishing a series of blogs from our ambassadors. Each has a personal story to tell, which we hope will inspire women in innovation.

The question we are giving them is: Where did it all go right?

infocus: women in innovation

Meet the infocus ambassadors - Fiona Marshall

From the moment I became a scientist I wanted to do something that made a difference.

"It’s about doing something that has a clear application in medicine and changes people’s lives for the better."

History didn’t excite me at school, and I was bottom of my class in languages. Biology, chemistry and physics fascinated me however. I found I excelled in sciences, and won a school prize and a prize in a national schools physics competition.

Being chosen on merit not because you are female
When we started curating the agenda for Venturefest East 2016, one of the criticisms raised was the fact that there were more male than female speakers (ironically, one of the critics was a male steering board member).

I was adamant, however, that we chose speakers for their merits, expertise and experience, and not because they were ‘females’.

Women in innovation: research reveals barriers and opportunities

New research reveals how women’s business ideas are as strong as men’s but just 1 in 7 innovation funding applications are from women.

A £200,000 funding competition for women with innovative business ideas has seen unprecedented demand.

The Women in Innovation Awards is a women-only competition offering investment and mentoring support. The aim is to encourage more women to apply for innovation funding. This will help them get their ideas off the ground. It will also help them develop entrepreneurial and business skills.

Why apply to the infocus Women in Innovation award?
